Mahmud Khalji

Mahmud Khalji
(?-1669)
A minister of Hoshang Shah (1405-1436) who seized the throne of Malwa after Hoshang's death (1436) and ruled until 1469. Throughout his reign, Mahmud Khalji was constantly at war with the neighboring powers. He is reported to have suffered a defeat at the hands of Rana Kumbha of Mewar in 1437 but later succeeded in gaining from Mewar important strong-holds such as Gagaraun (1444), Ranthambhor (1446), and Ajmer (1455). Mahmud Khalji's designs to grasp territories in the Deccan were thwarted by Mahmud Gavan's tactful invitation to Mahmud Begarha (1459-1513) to intervene (1466). The dynasty founded by Mahmud Khalji continued to rule Malwa until 1536.
